Politicians Admit Broadcast Royalty Unlikely to Move Anytime Soon.
With continued momentum in the U.S.. House to prevent undoing broadcast radio’s exemption from paying royalties to copyright holders, most didn't’t expect proponents of new fees to have the votes necessary to affect change. But earlier this week, even more doubt was cast on the proposal. During the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology’s hearing on the extension of the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act (STELA), some legislators addressed radio’s exemption, expressed the desire to change it but admitted it’s not likely to face a vote presently. As reported in Politico, bill co-sponsor Rep. Judy Chu says the bill is not on the radar and probably won’t surface until the telecom subcommittee takes up the broader issue of copyright law.
