About the Band
Strung Like a Horse is known for their signature brand of Americana and indie rock, distilled from old-school storytelling, roots instrumentations, and alt-rock edge. Mississippi-bred, Chattanooga-based frontman, Clayton Maselle, brings the influences of his heroes John Hartford, Split Lip Rayfield, Danny Barnes, The Band, Violent Femmes, and Old Crow Medicine Show to his singular songs. The band’s authenticity, high energy, and great fondness for a good time have made their live shows a cult favorite.
Strung’s first studio album, WHOA!, was produced in 2020 by multi-Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, John Prine, Calexico/Iron & Wine, Margo Price, Lucero) at the Sound Emporium in Nashville, and released on Transoceanic Records. Most of the tracks were laid down with the band playing together in one pass, without overdubs, and were sent direct to tape, making it a “record that captures the vibe of their rightfully celebrated live shows perfectly.”
WHOA! debuted at #2 on the Billboard Chart for Bluegrass Albums, #1 on Amazon New Releases, and #1 on the Amazon Alt-Country/Americana Chart. At radio, the album landed on the Top 5 Most Added and spent 16 consecutive weeks in the Top 40 at AMA/CDX Americana Radio Chart, while multiple singles held the Top 40 on both the AMA/CDX Americana Singles Chart and the Billboard BDS Triple A Radio Indicator Chart. Other highlights include: #4 on the Alt-Country Specialty Chart, #2 on the RMR Alternative Folk Chart, and #7 on Bluegrass Today’s Grassicana Chart.
The 12-song LP premiered in American Songwriter, and ultimately made the Americana Music Association’s “Top 100 Americana Radio Airplay Albums of 2021”; WMOT Roots Radio’s “100 Most Played Albums of 2021”; RMR’s “Top 20 Alternative Folk Albums of 2021”; No Depression’s “Best Roots Music Albums of 2020”; The Alternate Root’s “Top 100 Albums for 2020”; and “Next’s “Notable Songs in 2020” year-end lists. CMT and Ditty TV premiered the official music videos of their singles, “Till the Wheels Fall Off” and “Crazy Like Me.” The video for “I Was Born Here” was premiered at last year’s Healing Appalachia Festival.
Self-produced and recorded at Morningstar Studios in Philadelphia, SLAH’s second studio album, Dirt, was released August 2024 with lead single, “Find Your Way Home.” With the track featured at #1 on their Top 10 Releases of the Week, Alternate Root described the album as "vividly dramatic," saying, "Strung Like a Horse still exhibit power; the strength is in their contrast, as Dirt keeps its own pace while the band seamlessly move from ballad to banger."
Strung Like a Horse tours year-round, performing up to 100 shows a year, including Bonnaroo (labeled "Best Band Name"), Live on the Green 2022, Riverbend 2023-2022, Holla Yella Fest, Beaufort Music Festival, Moon River, JBE SummitFest 2022-2021, NPR Live Sessions, Suwanee Roots, Wildwood Revival, Rhythm & Blooms, Summer Camp, HartfordFest, LibertyFest, Jam in the Van, and AmericanaFest’s Under the Sun. No Depression declared their AmericanaFest debut in 2019 was among the “Best New Music.” Official showcases at AmericanaFest in Nashville and AmericanaFestUK in London are cited as a “Don’t Miss.” On the road, they have supported or opened for Old Crow Medicine Show, The Infamous Stringdusters, Shooter Jennings, Cage the Elephant, Coin, Sierra Ferrell, 49 Winchester, Railroad Earth, Los Lonely Boys, Del McCoury, Charlie Daniels, Sam Bush, Hot Buttered Rum, and others.
