Jim “Kimo” West’s instrument arsenal includes a number of slack key and other guitars, in various tunings, used to conjure beautiful, serene images of flowers, beaches, forests, moonlight, waves and birds. West’s new acoustic music is always calm, relaxing and meditative. A piece like “Tradewind Serenade” is played on solo slack key guitar and one’s imagines the feeling of a warm evening zephyr rustling through the leaves of coconut palms. In “Kipahulu Bound,” Kimo uses several multi-tracked guitars to present soundscapes of majestic waterfalls, rainbows and vistas. It was also very pleasant to hear a few tracks with colorings of fretless bass (played by Jimmy Johnson), violin (Ben Powell) and Japanese side flute and kane bells (George Abe). “Ka Maka ‘lo – Eye of The Hawk” is a very earthy blend of sounds from the guitars, percussion, violin and fretless bass. Closing with his solo guitar on “The Queen’s Lullaby,” Jim “Kimo” West reminds us that a peaceful world can only be achieved when we find peace in one’s heart and music. (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
