Formed in 2006 and based in Germany, Uusikuu is a Finnish-German band that plays folk-infused feel good music that exudes the positive energy and exuberance of Finnish tango. Current members are Laura Ryhänen (vocals), Mikko Kuisma (violin, vocals), Norbert Bremes (accordion, backing vocals), James Geier (guitar, backing vocals) and Florian Dohrmann (double bass, bass guitar backing vocals). Laura, Mikko and Norbert are founding band members, and James and Florian have been with Uusikuu since 2022. Special guest Milana Misic provides some vocals on two tracks of this latest album, their sixth overall and fourth on the Nordic Notes label.

The majority of Uusikuu’s “old Finnish dance music” is in the style of the golden era of Finnish tango from the 1930s to the 1960s, and they also perform and record fast humppas, waltzes, slow foxtrots and swing numbers. I immediately recognized “Bei Mir Bistu Shein” and Lee Hazelwood’s “Kotiviini (Summer Wine),” but the band also offers some contemporary originals, with authentic vintage stylings, such as “Mata Hari’s Eyes,” “Lempi” and “Pimedden työt.” It’s always a pleasure to hear world music of this quality that is moving and poignant while also demonstrating deep respect for its traditional roots.
