RC and the Moonpie Band is an “American roots band” that incorporates blues, R ‘n B, soul, rock ‘n roll and even a few Latin flavorings. Based in Green Swamp, North Carolina, the group emphasizes original material on their second album, “All This.” It’s a brazen move for these adventurists whose swagger is energetic and spontaneous. While blues are the cornerstone of their infectious groove, one funky track declares, “I’m shakin’ off the blues ‘cuz I ain’t got nothin’ to lose.” They revisit the theme on “The Buddy Guy Up” when RC exclaims “we play those blues and a little rock ‘n roll.”
High marks for adaptability, the band wisely calls upon some guest artists like Bruce Katz to add piano or organ on a few tracks. Bob Margolin’s guitar is a sweet addition on “Big Ass Jug o’ Wine,” and Rich Moncure’s trombone helps take ‘Somebody Buy Me a Drink” into jazzy territory. “Funky Way” closes the album with a guest appearance of The Green Swamp Horns that could’ve even been successfully incorporated into a few additional tracks such as “Cheated on Me” and the title track. RC and the Moonpie Band could be the next big unsigned garage band selling “All This” at gigs from an old suitcase. (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
