Performing as a duo since 2008, Julie and John Pennell emphasize well-written original, roots-based Americana material that demonstrates their eclectic affinity for and comfort with multiple genres. It’s been a decade since their released their seven-song self-titled EP in 2010. Now, “Keep on Walkin’” is another distinctive showcase for these Nashville-based songwriters’ unique flair, instrumental prowess and enchanting repertoire. This album highlights their originals, as well as a jazz standard (“Blue Skies”) and a charged-up rockabilly song (“Sittin’ by a River”) penned by friends, Bob Marion and Jeff Michel. Their originals range from spiritually-tinged up-tempo bluegrass (“Gonna Hitch a Ride”) to poignant, acoustic ballads (“I’m Not My Body”), jazzy swing (“Your Body Never Forgets”) to folky, nostalgic statements (“From Our Wandering” and “Waiting for You”). Julie’s sweet voice is filled with sincerity as she sings atop all-star accompaniment as varied as the material they offer. For example, Sam Bush (mandolin, fiddle) and Jerry Douglas (resophonic guitar) appear on four tracks, while other songs feature piano (Drew Basham, Ted Wilson), electric guitar and harmonica (Pat Bergeson), and drums (Chris Brown, Duffy Jackson). John Pennell plays bass, acoustic guitar and even some muted trumpet (on one track). Julie plays acoustic guitar, mountain dulcimer and banjo (on one track). A compelling set of memorable songs, this tightly crafted album will have wide appeal to those with eclectic tastes. (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
